Publications

In the inaugural Mahasabha meeting (1958.09.07) in which the Sri Kalyani Buddhist Society was established, the establishment of interim committees, religious, social workers, playgrounds and reading halls, propaganda and publications, old people’s homes, finance, discipline and administration, etc. were named by the five members. The appointment was also made. Chandrasiri Kularatne, Somapala Dissanayake, DD Hapuarachchi, DR Jayamanna, Chulasena Padmanatha were appointed to the publicity and publication department. 

The publishing department published Daham books and Dhamma tracts from time to time and the publication of the book “Kelani Netha” written by Maha Kavi Ananda Rajakaruna should be specially mentioned. The great poet Ananda Rajakaruna wrote this book “Kelani Netha” in 1943. But it was not published. This was written at the invitation of the Kelani Buddhist Society. The Kelani Buddhist Society fulfilled the request of the great poet Ananda Rajakaruna to keep an eye on Kelaniya. Mr. K. D. Lanarol has stated that Kelani Netha was used as a school book since 1965. The Kelani Young Buddhist Society of Kiribathgoda owns the “Kelani Netha” poetry book. Maha Kavi Ananda Rajakaruna is famous as a teacher, writer, newspaper editor and speaker. 

His full name was Agampodi Vijayavarnakula Alfred Rajakaruna who was born on February 7, 1885 in Madampa village, Ambalangoda, Southern Province. He later changed his English name “Alfred” to “Ananda” to set an example for others. He started his career as a teacher. Rajakaruna, who also worked in “Sinhala Bauddaya” and “Sinhala Samaya” papers, later became the editor-in-chief of “Buddhaya” Yantralaya. Raja Sirith Malaya, Namothe Mata, Geetananda, Ananda Rachana, Denham Varuna, Rukmavati Sahe, Sinhala Kodiya, National Wedding Padura, Sinhala Daru Nalawilla etc. wrote a large number of poetry books. The class of poems he wrote for children, “Rosa Male Natuwe Katoo” was not unknown in Sri Lanka at that time.
